Politics

This page is dedicated to my personal views on politics for those that are interested.

Tolkein

My political views can be summed up by this quote from J.R.R Tolkeins charachter, Treebeard, in The Two Towers;

“I am not altogether on anybody’s side, because nobody is altogether on my side."

I find it very hard to find a political party which shares my views of limited governemt, minimal taxation, minimal regulation, and not meddiling in foreign governments affairs. Especially in the UK, I have no hope for any of the parties, even Nigel Farages, Reform Party. I think he is a good campaigner but I dont think he will be a good operator. In New Zealand I was quite fond of the ACT party, led by David Seymour but he isnt having much sway as we speak in his coalition with National. Donald Trump said all the right things to get elected, even bringing in Elon, but Elon soon tired of the return to lavish spending without executing large spending cuts.

So I revert to the Treebeard party where I cant find a party to vocally support, and I will carry on my merry way trying to adapt to policies and laws as they come and go (rarely do they go).

Views

I guess my views are based on libertarianism, but not strict anarcho capitalism, I think there is need for limited government, but maybe more so the Swiss system of direct democracy and localism rather than representative democracy and centralised power. I think voting in MPs is flawed as the majority of people tend to vote for personality rather than policy or brains. I.e. its how blatantly incompetent people like Jacinda Ardern or Justin Trudeau were able to to be not just elected but also re-elected despite showing the country in there first term just how bad they are as operators. When Jacinda became party leader, she had the exact same policies as her predecessor but she had a different smile and the NZ Labour party jumped 20 points in the polls overnight. I never understood how people would vote for someone in that manner. Its like they dont mind someone breaking there leg as long as they do it with a smile they liked.

I also like localism, I think the federal system in the US is what has kept the country from blowing up. I.e. not concentrating too much power in the hands of so few. Although each admin seems content on concentrating more and more power into the president which I think will be the end of the US empire eventually. But also it can have benefits, just look at China and Singapore. If you have a centralised system operated by someone highly intelligent then it can work wonders in a short time frame, but you also open up huge tail risks. I think the better system for longevity to ensure personal freedoms is localism.
