If you wanted a cheap little computer and something to have a little play on, look no further than a Raspberry Pi. I have the Pi5 with 8gb ram with a heatsink and case. Very cheap, it cost me around 140 in total and its very quick. The aim of these gadgets is to teach programming and customising hardware to novices and enthusiasts. The stock itself is RPI.LN and its quite pricey where it is today. But I follow out of interest in how they'll do. Its hard for to think how they'll scale as its quite a niche offering and most people are happy to just buy a HP laptop or macbook etc. Also they use Sony to manufacture and they will take the manufacturing marign. On the other hand RPI is an asset light business with just R&D and S&M required. I guess with scale they could build themselves, but right now they probably dont have the scale required to make it worthwhile. But anyway, if you wanted a cool hobby or to teach the kids about computers, I dont think you could go wrong with what they have to offer.
You're probably thinking 8gb ram is nothing to ride home about, but these minimal linux machines only consume around 250-400mb for the operating system (my artix runit with dwm is just 240mb), whereas windows 11 and mac needs around 2.5-4gb!. Insane really.
